The Zoldycks: Part 1 (ゾルディック()()()()()()()()()()①, Zorudikku Ke (Ichi)) is the 40th chapter of the Hunter × Hunter manga, written and illustrated by Yoshihiro Togashi.

Synopsis[]

Gon asks Zebro for the key and threatens to climb the wall if he refuses. Leorio angrily reminds him about Mike, but Gon replies that he hates the idea of testing someone's friends and that he won't use the Testing Gate. Zebro understands his point and agrees with him, but stresses that he will be eaten if he uses the key to enter. Kurapika adds that taking a test is preferable to suicide, but Gon continues to wait for Zebro to hand him the key. As Leorio and Kurapika understand that Gon won't change his mind, Zebro says that while he won't give Gon the key, he can't allow him to climb the wall either.

Chap 40 - Gon ordering Gotoh to put Killua on the phone

Gon ordering Gotoh to put Killua on the phone

Zebro tells the three to wait there as he enters the guard booth and explains to someone on the phone that three of Killua's friends are waiting at the front gate. After the reply causes Zebro to apologize and quickly hang up, Gon asks if he called the mansion for him. Zebro explains that he only spoke with one of their butlers, who handle all communications for the Zoldycks. Gon asks if he can talk with the butler, and while Zebro agrees, he stresses that it won't be of any use. After the butler answers, Gon explains that he is a friend of Killua's and asks to speak with him. However, the butler says that Killua has no friends before immediately hanging up. Gon quickly calls back and angrily asks how they know that Killua has no friends, ordering the butler to put Killua on the phone.

With Leorio and Kurapika left stunned, the butler confirms Gon's name and wonders how he would confirm his real identity over the phone. Gon again tells him to put Killua on the phone since he will be able to tell, but the butler says that voice is no guarantee, suddenly playing a recording of Gon's previous statement. The butler explains that voices are easy to mimic and that even if he confirmed his appearance, he could be under the influence of one of Killua's enemies. He refuses to get Killua involved and explains that the butlers' job is to prevent any of the Zoldycks' enemies from getting near them.

After the butler asks Gon to leave and again hangs up, Gon calmly walks outside the booth toward the wall. Leorio realizes how angry he is, and Gon suddenly readies his fishing rod, flinging the hook and line over the wall. Leorio begs him not to do it, but Gon secures the line and tells them to wait there. As the three argue back and forth, Zebro finally gives in and hands Gon the key. Leorio and Kurapika assure him that they will change Gon's mind, but Zebro reveals that he will go through the door with Gon, explaining that there's a small chance that Mike doesn't attack since he knows him. Gon says that he doesn't want to risk Zebro's life, but Zebro replies that he wouldn't be able to face Killua again if he let one of his friends get eaten by Mike. Gon pulls back his fishing line and apologizes again. The other three smile, and Zebro internally praises Gon's character.

Chap 40 - Mike

Gon encountering Mike

As Zebro points out that Gon isn't afraid of Mike, he guesses that he loves animals and grew up playing in the wilderness, which Gon quickly confirms. Zebro tells the three that he will open the Testing Gate again so that they can see Mike for themselves. As the four enter the forest, Leorio wonders if it's safe, and Zebro tells him not to worry as he calls for Mike. The nearby bushes are rustled, and Gon is the first to spot the enormous wolf-like creature before them. Sweat pours down Gon's face as Mike stares at him and then lies down. Zebro asks Gon if he understands that Mike is different from any other animal he has encountered in the wild. He guesses that Gon thought he could communicate with him until he looks into his eyes, explaining that Mike is taking in the appearances and smells of people new to him. He finally describes Mike as a living machine and says that the creature would attack even him if ordered to do so, asking Gon if he thinks he could fight him. Gon quickly shakes his head and replies that Mike seriously scares him.

Zebro chuckles at Gon's honesty and leads the three to the nearby servants' quarters, where they will spend the night. He changes shifts with another groundskeeper, who is surprised to see guests and says that Zebro doesn't let just anyone inside. Zebro tells Gon to push open the building's doors, but when he tries to push with his right hand, he has trouble opening it. Zebro reveals that the doors weigh 440 pounds each, explaining that they must work out constantly.

Chap 40 - Leorio opening the first set of doors

Leorio opening the first set of doors

After Leorio opens both doors with considerable effort, Zebro shows them slippers to wear (44 pounds each) and offers them fresh tea in cups (44 pounds). He learns that the three are on tourist visas in Padokea, telling them they can stay in the country for a month at most. He adds that they can train in the house and that while they could just head for the mountain, it would be cheating. The three smiles and Zebro adds that after one month, they should be able to work together to open the first door. The three agree that while they don't like tests, it's the only fair way to proceed. Zebro happily gives them weighted vests to wear (except while sleeping), which start at 110 pounds. He calls Leorio sturdy and says that he should be able to open the door by himself soon. After barely two weeks, Leorio is seen opening the first door as Gon cheers for him, and Kurapika can't believe that Gon's broken arm healed in only ten days (and that he is jumping up and down while wearing 220 pounds). With Zebro stunned, an exasperated Leorio says that they can now enter fair and square as he celebrates with Gon and Kurapika. Zebro happily looks on and says to himself that he never thought a real contender would appear, surprised to have three of them.
