"I’ll chase you to the ends of the earth and kill you."

— Machi to Hisoka, in "Three-Way Struggle: Part 1"

Machi Komacine (マチ゠コマチネ, Machi Komachine) is member #3 of the Phantom Troupe.[2] Her physical strength ranked sixth among the group.[4]

Machi's manga appearance

Machi is a short, young woman with a petite build. She has blue eyes and pink, messy hair that reaches the middle of her back, but she most often wears it tied up. She is one of the few Troupe members that prefers to wear traditional Japanese-style clothing, looking like a modern-day kunoichi (female ninja). Her usual outfit consists of short tights matched with a short-sleeved uwagi, an obi sash worn around her waist and an obijime tied over it, a pair of fingerless gloves with a pincushion, tabi boots or socks with zōri, and warmers that cover her lower legs.

Her spider tattoo has the number 3 on the spider's abdomen,[2] but the tattoo location has yet to be revealed.

In the 1999 anime adaptation, her eyes are brown and her hair is blue. Her hair is changed to dark purple during the OVAs.

Personality

49 - Machi and Nobunaga argue

Machi fearlessly arguing with Nobunaga

Machi is one of the coldest members of Troupe, almost never losing her cool or displaying any emotions. However, according to Shalnark, she is a nice person at heart.[5] She has been shown to care for Pakunoda, as she was one of the members who mourned her death and watched over her grave. Her caring side was also shown when she was much younger as when Sarasa was brutally murdered; Machi hugged the bag Sarasa was put in tightly and told the group that they needed to take her home.[6] Furthermore, Machi is fiercely loyal to Chrollo, going so far as to challenge two other Troupe members for his sake. She also stated that she would hunt down Hisoka if he were to kill Chrollo. She is very confident in her strength and replies accordingly if threatened.

Machi also has sharp intuitions, which have turned out to be true most of the time and are trusted by some of her comrades, such as Nobunaga[7] and Chrollo.[8] Hisoka seems to have high regard for Machi and her abilities,[9] although she treats him as a nuisance at best and a potential enemy of Chrollo's at worst. However, she seemed to care for him to some extent after he died, and when he was revived, she merely told him that she hoped he had learned his lesson, although her job was to confirm his death. When Hisoka restrained her, she revealed a much wilder side, screaming in anger at him.[5]

HxH2011 EP51 Machi Nen Threads

Machi massacring Mafia members

Like the other members of the Troupe, Machi is also cold-blooded, ruthless, and not above inhumane mass murder, most notably when she brutally massacred the Kurta Clan alongside her teammates, and when she casually suggested killing Gon and Killua for crossing paths with the Spiders again.[10] The gruesome murder of their dear friend Sarasa and their thirst for revenge against the perpetrators have desensitized her to such atrocities.[6]

Background

Chap 395 - Young Machi

Machi in her youth

Machi originated from Meteor City, a junkyard city inhabited by outcasts of the world. People who live there do not exist in any official records, and the existence of the city itself is known to very few people.[11]

One day, about fifteen years prior to her series debut, Machi spotted Chrollo, Shalnark, and Franklin running with a videotape and tossing it from hand to hand. She reports the fact to Uvogin, who gets in the boys' way. He knocks out Shalnark, and gets into a fight with Franklin, while Chrollo gets away.[12] Machi was with Uvogin to witness the film Power Cleaners after Chrollo and his three friends dubbed over it. When Chrollo imitates the villain's character, Machi, the other children are most impressed by the character he plays, showing unprecedented emotions. Machi then watched the events unfolding between Uvogin and Chrollo, where the former expected the latter to return the videotape that was taken in Uvo's territory. However, Sarasa came in between the two and 'dubbed' over what Uvogin really wanted to say to Chrollo after the film and live performance, expressing his awe and amazement. The group then smiled in approval, but when everyone chose their roles to help with the next screening, Machi refused and did not want to take part.[13]

Chap 397 - Uga Forest

The Spiders searching for Sarasa in the dark forest

Eventually, she did participate but was offered the role of 'princess' by Uvo, which she strongly said no to. Machi exclaimed that she would rather be a 'bad guy' than be a 'princess.' When Sarasa disappeared, a search ensued, and all of the children (including the troupe members) who attended the screening were looking for her at the request of Chrollo. Machi, alongside Pakunoda, Phinks, and Feitan, were on massive heaps of garbage to call out and look for Sarasa. As Chrollo and Uvogin looked to the Forest, they found a bag hanging on a tree that was revealed to be Sarasa's mangled body. After Uvo and Chrollo argued about what her murderers wrote, Machi shouted at Uvo, who turned to leave, asking if he would leave Sarasa's body behind. She then hugged the bag containing Sarasa's body tightly, requesting that she be taken home and sympathizing with the pain Sarasa went through. Paku and Sheila cried in response, and then Machi apologized sincerely to Sarasa's lifeless body. After the funeral, she joined Uvogin and six others in pledging their lifelong loyalty to Chrollo. Then she took some time to train using Nen under Renko in Meteor City's Kirimori Valley.[6]

Three years later, Machi was present during the foundation of Phantom Troupe, along with Franklin, Feitan, Pakunoda, Nobunaga, Uvogin, Shalnark and Chrollo.[11]

As a founding member of the troupe, she took part in the massacre of the Kurta Clan.[14]

Plot

Heavens Arena arc

Machi2011

Machi appearing at Heavens Arena

Machi is hired by Hisoka to patch him up after his match against Kastro at Heavens Arena. She watches the match and waits for Hisoka in the tunnel nearby. She congratulates him on his victory, but then calls him an idiot for willingly taking that much damage. She uses her Nen ability to reattach his severed arms, charging him Jenny Symbol 201170 million in total. While he hides the sutures with Texture Surprise, she silently commends him for his speed. She then tells Hisoka that the Phantom Troupe gathering in Yorknew City scheduled for the end of August has become compulsory. She also warns him that Chrollo may punish him personally if he skips another job. She leaves before Hisoka can finish asking her if she is free for dinner.[9]

Yorknew City arc

The Phantom troup arrive at York Shin City 2011

Machi and three other Troupe members making their way to Yorknew City

On August 31st, Machi is seen with Franklin, Nobunaga, and Feitan as they walk through the Gordeau Desert to Yorknew City. Later, at the meeting of the Troupe in an abandoned building, Chrollo tells her and the other members that they are going to steal all the items at the Underground Auction.[15] On the evening of September 1st, they infiltrate the Cemetery Building and kill all the Mafia members and their clients,[16] but they discover that the items have already been removed from the vault by a Shadow Beast named Owl. They then escape in a hot-air balloon to the Gordeau Desert as dozens of Mafia members chase after them.[17]

2011 EP44 Troupe covering their ears

Machi covering her ears

After their hot-air balloon is shot down, Machi, Shalnark, and Shizuku are seen playing a game of cards as Uvogin massacres all the Mafia members[18] and four Shadow Beasts by himself.[19] When Uvogin is captured by Kurapika, Machi immediately uses a needle and a Nen thread to track Uvogin. She and four other members then chase after Kurapika by car, but just before they can catch up with him, the remaining Shadow Beasts arrive and stop them.[20] Machi and her comrades easily kill the remaining Shadow Beasts except Owl, who they capture and torture to retrieve the auction items.

Phinks and other members rescuing Uvogin

Machi rescuing Uvogin

Near midnight, they find where Uvogin is being held captive and free him after Phinks kills Dalzollene.[3] In the early hours of September 2nd, Machi tells Uvogin about the items and the deaths of the Shadow Beasts, but he insists on finding and killing the chain user instead of returning to the Troupe's hideout with them. She and the other members have no choice but to let Uvogin do what he wants.[21] Soon afterwards, Uvogin is killed by Kurapika in a duel in the Gordeau Desert, and Chrollo tells the Troupe members that they will change their plans if Uvogin doesn’t return by dawn.[4]

On September 3rd, Machi and Nobunaga wait in the middle of a square in an attempt to lure out the chain user, but they attract Gon and Killua's attention instead and are tailed by them.[7] With the help of Phinks and Pakunoda, who have been secretly following them,[22] they easily capture the two boys and bring them back to their hideout.[23] In the evening, she and the other members excluding Nobunaga[24] launch a retaliatory attack on the Cemetery Building,[25] slaughtering police and 2,000 Mafia members.[26][27] After the deaths of the Ten Dons, the Troupe members take over the auction and have Kortopi create copies of the items. Backstage, Hisoka distracts Bean while Machi uses her Nen thread to hang and kill him.[28] Kortopi then creates fake corpses of five of the Troupe members (including Machi) to trick the Mafia into thinking that some of them were killed during the encounter. Machi and the others then return to the hideout to celebrate their successful plan.[29]

HxH2011 EP55 Machi gets Chrollo's attention

Machi with Chrollo and Pakunoda

In the afternoon of September 4th, at the Troupe's hideout, Nobunaga insists that they keep pursuing the chain user instead of leaving Yorknew.[11] Knowing that it’s impossible to dissuade him, Chrollo uses Neon's stolen ability to write out fortunes for Nobunaga and the other members, eventually learning that five more of them will die if they meet the chain user within two weeks. They then intend to return to Meteor City to avoid that misfortune,[30] but Hisoka alters his own fortune with Texture Surprise and convinces the whole group to stay in Yorknew to take care of the chain user.[31]

Later, Chrollo is able to deduce that the chain user is connected to Neon and is the last member of the Kurta Clan who wants to obtain the Scarlet Eyes. After Kortopi tracks the copies that were sold at the auction, Chrollo uses a map to work out that the chain user is at the Hotel Beitacle. He then orders Kortopi, Machi, Nobunaga, Pakunoda, and Shizuku to go with him to the hotel.[32] On the way there, Chrollo notices that they are being followed by two people, telling Kortopi, Nobunaga, and Pakunoda to go ahead while he, Machi, and Shizuku stay behind, eventually capturing Gon and Killua again.[10]

HxH2011 EP57 Gon and Killua attack Machi and Pakunoda

Machi being attacked by Killua

Chrollo, Machi, and Shizuku take Gon and Killua to the hotel[33] and are eventually joined by Pakunoda's group in the lobby. Chrollo tells Pakunoda to check the boys’ memories again, but once she does and before she can reveal what she has learned about Kurapika, a power outage suddenly happens, allowing Gon and Killua to try to make an escape. Despite the total darkness, Machi easily recaptures Killua even after he breaks some of her ribs while Nobunaga catches Gon.[34] However, when the light comes back on, they realize that Chrollo has been captured by the chain user. In Pakunoda's flashback remembering the formation of the Troupe in Meteor City, Machi can be seen among the founding members listening to Chrollo's speech about the importance of the Spider.[35]

HxH2011 EP57 Machi and Nobunaga hit Phinks

Phinks, Feitan, and Shalnark soon arrive at the hotel. The Troupe then receives a call from Kurapika, who tells them not to follow him, not to hurt the hostages, and to give the phone to Pakunoda. He then tells Pakunoda to go to Lingon Airport alone to negotiate the terms of a hostage exchange and that the other members have to return to their hideout. Phinks, Feitan, and Shalnark try to follow Pakunoda, but Nobunaga stops them after he fears that Chrollo will be killed, leading to a heated quarrel between Nobunaga and Phinks. Because Machi and Shizuku agree with Nobunaga, and Kurapika tells them about Melody's ability to detect lies, they all return to the hideout as ordered.[36]

HxH2011 EP58 Machi shot by Memory Bomb

Machi receiving Pakunoda’s memories

Pakunoda returns from the airport and tells the others that she is leaving with just the two boys. Phinks becomes so angry that he wants to get rid of the boys and then go after the chain user,[37] but Machi disagrees with him. She and Kortopi side with Pakunoda against Phinks and Feitan, who think that she and the others are being manipulated by the chain user. After their quarrel is interrupted by Gon, and Franklin stresses that any more in-fighting will be the death of the Spider, Phinks finally agrees to let Pakunoda leave and to see what happens.[38]

After successfully carrying out the hostage exchange, Pakunoda returns without Chrollo and fires six of her Memory Bombs into Machi and five other members, quickly collapsing afterwards. Shizuku checks her body and confirms that she's dead, asking the others what happened. Phinks then explains everything to the others.[39]

Greed Island arc

2011 EP59 Machi & Shizuku as Phinks enters G.I.

Machi surprised

On September 6th, Phinks and Feitan steal a copy of Greed Island from Battera and bring it back to the hideout.[40] Phinks invites Machi and the others to play, but they decline or offer to play later.[41] On September 10th, Machi is seen talking with Bonolenov near Pakunoda's grave as Shalnark convinces Shizuku and Kortopi to enter Greed Island.[42] After Shalnark discovers that Greed Island is an island in the real world and that there's an exorcist on the island, Machi enters the game with the other members to search for them. They are forced to cooperate with Hisoka because Chrollo asked him personally to find the exorcist who will remove Kurapika’s Judgment Chain from around his heart.[43]

After meeting up with the others, Hisoka is told by Shalnark that Machi and Nobunaga are tailing the exorcist. Shalnark shows Machi’s thread to Hisoka and tells him to follow it. Phinks stresses the importance of the job, and Hisoka knows that it’s his only chance to fight Chrollo. Hisoka meets up with Machi and Nobunaga to spy on the disguised exorcist. He then senses Kalluto skulking in the shadows and realizes that it was his ability that allowed the Troupe to find the exorcist. After they introduce Kalluto as Hisoka’s replacement and Hisoka seems interested in him, Machi and Nobunaga warn Kalluto to be careful since Hisoka will go after anything. Hisoka assures Nobunaga that he will negotiate with the exorcist, and Machi asks him if he actually intends to fight Chrollo. Hisoka replies that he does and asks her who she wants to survive, with Machi quickly telling him that he can drop dead once he finishes the job with the exorcist. Hisoka then asks her what she will do if he ends up killing Chrollo, and Machi sternly tells him that she will chase him to the ends of the earth and kill him.[44]

Chap 357 - Machi seeing Hisoka's post-mortem Nen

Machi seeing Hisoka's post-mortem Nen

After Hisoka’s death match against Chrollo at Heavens Arena, Machi, Shalnark, and Kortopi stand over Hisoka’s body and confirm that he’s dead. As the other two begin to leave, Machi tells them that since Hisoka paid her in advance, she will stitch him up. Kortopi whispers to Shalnark and confirms that Machi wouldn't accept money when Hisoka was fighting Chrollo, with Shalnark adding that Machi is a nice person at heart. Now alone with Hisoka’s corpse, Machi looks at the damage around his neck and face, thanking him for helping to exorcise Chrollo. As she prepares to stitch him up, aura suddenly surrounds Hisoka’s body and leaves Machi stunned before she realizes that it must be post-mortem Nen. Hisoka comes back to life and asks Machi to confirm that he was really dead. As Hisoka realizes how difficult it is to fight someone like Chrollo, Machi sighs and hopes that he has learned his lesson, telling him to pick his battles next time. She tells him to sit down while she stitches him up, but Hisoka expertly uses his Texture Surprise to cover his wounds and give himself multiple prostheses. When Machi turns her back to Hisoka and prepares to leave, he restrains her with Bungee Gum and asks her to tell the other Spiders that he will fight any of them on sight until he has killed them all. Machi threatens to kill him on the spot and orders him to remove his gum, but Hisoka references their love and tells her to get it off by herself, leaving Machi even more enraged.[5]

Chap 371 - Chrollo and Machi

Machi and Chrollo talking

On the second day of the Black Whale’s voyage, Machi meets up with Chrollo at a crowded market in Tier 5. Both of them want to be the one to kill Hisoka after the deaths of Kortopi and Shalnark. Machi suggests flipping a coin, but Chrollo reminds her that coins are for disputes between two individuals, stressing that every member of the Troupe wants to kill Hisoka. He then tells her to find Hisoka and guarantees that he’s somewhere on the ship.[45]

Chap 377 - Spiders moving out

The Spiders splitting up to find Hisoka

On the fourth day of the voyage, the Troupe gathers together in the crowded central dining hall and discusses the situation regarding Hisoka. When the Cha-R Family claims the table for themselves, the Troupe leaves without a fight. Chrollo states that they will meet again at that table and orders them to bring him Hisoka's head, with the Troupe members going their separate ways.[2] Machi is last seen by herself in a standard cabin on Tier 5.[46]

On the seventh day of the voyage, after Phinks, Nobunaga, and Feitan discuss the current situation with Ken'i and Tajao, Phinks asks them to verify Morena's location while they contact the other Troupe members and hunt down the hit man.[47] On the tenth day of the voyage, after Onior confirms with Hinrigh that Hisoka isn't in Tier 4, he says that he can permit the Spiders to search that tier.[6]

Equipment

Sewing Needles: Machi keeps several needles in the pincushion she wears on her wrist. She uses them in conjunction with her Nen ability to stitch wounds[48] and track targets.[20]

Abilities & Powers

Due to Machi being born in Meteor City, her existence is not recorded in any database, which makes obtaining information on her nearly impossible.[49] As a member of the Phantom Troupe, Machi is a very powerful fighter. She has extreme confidence in her strength, demonstrated when she was willing to engage in combat with both Phinks and Feitan in order to let Pakunoda go to the hostage exchange with Kurapika.[38] She also confidently told Hisoka that she would kill him if he ever managed to kill Chrollo. Furthermore, when Gon and Leorio couldn't grasp the extent of her and Nobunaga's strength, Killua compared it to that of Hisoka.[50] When dividing the Troupe into groups to prevent Kurapika from killing them one by one, Chrollo placed Machi in a team with two out of the five members who had received a foreboding fortune and possessed abilities that were said to be invaluable assets to the Spiders.[51]

Like the rest of the Troupe, Machi has superhuman physical attributes but has yet to fight with her bare hands (although the guard she used to defend against Killua[34] and Hisoka[5] suggests that she has some expertise in the field). She primarily resorts to using her threads in combat, restraining[10] or hanging her opponents,[28] or even setting elaborate traps.[26] She is also rather observant, understanding that she and Nobunaga were being watched by professionals.[7]

Preternatural Perception: Machi has been shown to possess what some may refer to as a sixth sense, gathering information from her surroundings through no discernible means. She knew that she and Nobunaga were being watched by Gon, Killua, and Leorio (although she could not discern their positions).[7] Perhaps more impressively, she was aware of Gon and Killua tailing her and Nobunaga while the two were in a state of Zetsu, with the latter praising their skill in the technique. Unlike Gon and Killua, she was able to sense that there were other pursuers as well.[22]

Enhanced Strength: The fact that she ranked sixth in arm-wrestling within the Phantom Troupe is a testament to her brawn.[4] She can easily lift several adult men, hung by her wires,[26] and managed to immobilize a physically strong individual like Killua by wrapping her arms around him.[34]

Machi appears behind Gon

Machi appearing behind Gon before he can even move

Immense Speed and Reflexes: A testament to Machi's speed is first shown when she flawlessly stitches Hisoka's severed arms in a matter of seconds, with her hands looking like a mere blur.[9] After he unleashed his deafening howl and the other members asked why he didn’t warn them, Uvogin replied that they were fast enough to cover their ears before the sound reached them.[19] She was the only one swift enough to react after Uvogin was restrained by Kurapika's Chain Jail, throwing a Nen-imbued needle onto his calf to keep track of him.[20] Most remarkable of all, she was able to notice that Gon was going to move, appear behind him, and put her hands on his shoulders before he could even catch a glimpse of her or make a single step.[23]

Enhanced Agility: Machi can run on the sides of buildings and easily jump horizontally from one to another.[10] She can also easily climb multiple floors of a building in a matter of seconds.[23]

Immense Endurance: Machi is extremely resistant to pain. Even though Killua stabbed her in the chest, breaking some of her ribs and ripping through muscle, she still managed to restrain him while keeping Gon bound.[34] Despite the multiple fractures, she was later seen moving, breathing, and speaking normally.[35][36]

Machi abs - 57

Machi preventing Killua's hand from piercing further

Muscle Control: Machi has excellent control over her muscles, preventing Killua's hand from reaching her vitals and then keeping it in place.[34] She seems to be able to close her injuries by contracting her muscles, with no blood appearing on her clothes even though her chest was pierced.[36]

Keen Intellect: Machi managed to figure out the strategy that Hisoka used to defeat Kastro, proving herself to be quite intelligent.[9]

Immense Intuition: According to Chrollo[8] and Nobunaga, Machi's hunches are often accurate. Her feeling that Uvogin was dead[7] and that Gon and Killua were connected to the chain user[22][8] proved to be correct, even when Gon and Killua themselves did not know about Kurapika's involvement with the Troupe.[8]

Expert in Stealth: Machi can sneak up on multiple enemies and kill them without being noticed.[26] This characteristic is reminiscent of ninjitsu and suits her kunoichi appearance.

Nen

Machi is a Transmuter[3] with dual affinity toward Enhancement.[52] As a member of the Phantom Troupe, she is extremely proficient in Nen. The techniques she has been seen using are Hatsu,[9] In,[20] Ren,[38] and Gyo,[10] with the probable addition of Ken[38] and, obviously, Ten. Outside of her natural category, she appears to have at least a working command of Emission.[9]

Machi's Nen Type: Transmutation
Type: Transmutation Nen Stitches ((ネン)()(ほう)(ごう)()()()()()(), Nenshi Hōgō—lit. "Spiritual Suture")
HxH2011 EP32 Machi Nen Stitches
Machi is capable of creating stitches which can be used to sew up wounds and even to completely reattach severed limbs in a short time. From what she said after reattaching Hisoka's arm and since he was able to move his fingers immediately after the operation, it is reasonable to assume that the stitches also have intense regenerative properties, either revitalizing the dead cells or stimulating the production of new ones.[9]
Type: Transmutation Nen Threads*
MachiNenThreads
Machi transmutes her aura into threads to manipulate her target's movements like a puppeteer.[26] She can also use them in elaborate traps to capture, strangle,[28] or cut enemies. Machi notes that the strength of the threads is inversely proportional to their length: a thread long enough to circle the globe would be as strong as cotton, but a thread less than one meter in length could lift a ton.[3] The threads are also very durable, unable to be cut or torn. However, when the threads leave Machi's fingers, their strength is reduced significantly.

Trivia

  • In the official databook, her name is also spelled as "Matiy".[1] The Volume 34 extras confirm this spelling and reveal her surname, "Kohmatiyneit".
  • Machi's name, if spelled with kanji, could be "襠"—an article of clothing Gusset, a piece of material added to reduce stress in tight-fitting clothes. It could also be "待ち", "waiting"—referring to her patient and calm personality.
  • Machi is the second Troupe member to be shown.
  • Machi is the only woman Hisoka has seemingly shown romantic interest in when he asks her to have dinner with him.[9]
  • Machi appears to be the only Troupe member aware of Hisoka's Texture Surprise ability.[31]
  • According to the Volume 34 extras, Machi was supposed to be killed by Hisoka at the end of the fight between him and Chrollo, but Togashi eventually dismissed the idea.[55]
  • Machi and Nobunaga appear at a ramen shop in a Volume 32 extra.

Anime and Manga Differences

  • In the 1999 anime adaptation, Machi witnesses Hisoka fighting Gon in the Heavens Arena, and when she captures Gon with the other Spiders, she asks Hisoka why didn't he talk to Gon if he already knew him.
  • In the 2011 anime adaptation, it is visually suggested that Machi also has eidetic memory (i.e., photographic memory), as shown when she seemingly "takes a picture" of Hisoka's wounds with her own eyes before starting to stitch/heal his arms.[56]
  • In the 2011 anime adaptation, while Kurapika was talking with Uvogin about the Kurta Clan massacre, Machi's Nen Threads were seen in the background with dead people hanging from it.[57]
