287th Hunter Exam arcEdit

In order to prevent Gon from becoming a Hunter like his father Ging Freecss, Mito has always lied to him that his parents were dead. After he learns about the truth from Kite and wants to take the 287th Hunter Exam, she tells him that she will only sign the exam application card under one condition: he must catch the Master of the Swamp, a giant fish which is very hard to catch. Gon succeeds, and Mito has no choice but to give him her permission. She then tells him that his father abandoned him to her when he was a baby in a last attempt to discourage him, but to no avail. Right before Gon's departure, Mito reveals to him that it was actually she who took Gon away from Ging in court.

Heavens Arena arcEdit

After Gon, having become a professional Hunter, returns to Whale Island with Killua, Mito tells him everything she knows about Ging. It turns out she and Ging are cousins and they were the only chidren of the island. Mito would often get lost and Ging was always the first to find her regardless of where she was. When Ging returned to the island with a baby Gon ten years after leaving it at the age of 11 to become a Hunter, Mito took the guardianship of Gon from him and told him to never come back. She then gives Gon a small box that Ging left her, which contains items that will lead Gon to him.

  • The 1999 anime adaptation has her give Gon Ging's old fishing rod so that he could catch the Master of the Swamp. This did not happen in the manga.
  • Even though she is always referred to as Gon's aunt, they are actually first cousins once removed.
  • In the 1999 anime adaptation, she was changed into Ging's sister-in-law and their grandmother was changed into the mother of her and Ging's wife, hence she is Gon's actual aunt in this series.
