Zevil Island (ゼビル()(とう)()()()()()()()(), Zebiru-tō) is the site of the Fourth Phase of the 287th Hunter Exam.[1]

Overview[]

The island is remote and contains an isthmus in the middle. There is also a wide variety of unique areas, such as a dense forest and fields of tall grass. The island is home to creatures such as Hemotropic Butterflies and Fisher Birds.[2]

Plot[]

Hunter Exam arc[]

After the 24 examinees who passed the Third Phase of the exam exit Trick Tower, Lippo congratulates them and reveals that the Fourth Phase will take place on Zevil Island, which can be seen in the distance behind him.[1] Once they each draw a card and Lippo explains the parameters of the phase, he hopes that they enjoy their stay on the island. The examinees then board a boat, and Khara mentions that it will take two hours to reach it. Once they do so, Khara explains that they will disembark in the order in which they completed the Third Phase, with two-minute intervals between each of them. She adds that they will spend one week on the island, collect the six points they need, and then return to the landing site. Gon eventually disembarks and immediately sets out to find Hisoka.[3]

As Gon sits in a tree and wonders how he will steal Hisoka's badge, he spots Pokkle stalking Kyu in the tall grass below. He decides to use Pokkle's strategy to get close to Hisoka without him knowing and to steal his badge before he can get him. After practicing on static and swinging targets, Gon realizes that birds will offer the closest challenge to Hisoka. Although he struggles at first, he eventually finds a pattern in the bird's movement (flying close to the water to catch a fish), allowing him to catch the bird with his hook.[4]

Gon's hands are left bloody and blistered from all of his practicings, but he realizes that the strategy of striking his target when it’s going after its prey will give him the best chance. Wondering how he will find Hisoka on such a large island, he eventually encounters several Hemotropic Butterflies, which are drawn to the smell of blood and lead him to Hisoka. He then kneels in the bushes nearby and waits for Hisoka to make the first move. Elsewhere on the island, Tonpa and Sommy work together to steal Leorio's badge, but Kurapika arrives and incapacitates the former before he can make his escape.[2]

After restraining Tonpa and leaving him to fail the exam, Kurapika and Leorio track down Sommy to recover the latter's badge. The two then prepare to work together to find Leorio's target (Ponzu). Meanwhile, Killua is seen walking in a dense forest and tells the person stalking him to show themselves. As Gon continues to wait, Hisoka tells someone to show themselves and begins walking straight toward Gon, still hidden in the bushes nearby. However, Goz suddenly stands up and asks to fight Hisoka. As Hisoka dodges all the strikes from Goz's spear, Gon prepares to steal Hisoka's badge, but Hisoka tells Goz that he refuses to fight a dying man. With Hemotropic Butterflies flying around him, Goz angrily charges toward Hisoka, but several needles suddenly pierce his face and kill him. Gittarackur appears and reveals his true appearance, digging a hole and preparing to wait until the deadline since he now has six points. As night falls and Gon continues to follow him, Hisoka eventually spots Kurapika and Leorio in the dense forest below, eager to confront them since he needs two more points.[5]

After a tense stand-off, Hisoka agrees to take a badge worth one point as Kurapika and Leorio cautiously leave. Gon then encounters Hisoka's bloodlust and continues to follow him as the latter looks for a target to attack. Gon climbs a very tall tree and spots Agon in the distance, realizing that he will be Hisoka's next target and waiting in the nearby bushes to make his move.[6]

Gon left uneasy after his encounter with Hisoka

As Hisoka charges toward Agon, Gon uses his fishing rod and snags Hisoka's badge with the hook. Agon falls dead from Hisoka's playing card, and Gon quickly makes his escape. However, he suddenly begins to stumble before falling to the ground. Geretta appears behind him and takes both Gon and Hisoka's badges, also removing the blowdart from the back of Gon's neck. Soon afterward, Hisoka appears holding Geretta's severed head and returns his #44 badge. Gon staggers to his feet and refuses to take it, but Hisoka strikes him with a hard punch and sends him flying back, telling him that he can return the badge once he can punch him in the face like that. As night falls, a sulking and determined Gon is seen sitting inside a hollowed-out tree.[7]

Elsewhere on the island, Killua easily deals with all three of the Amori Brothers, stealing the badge he needs and throwing the other two far into the distance. Hanzo leaps into the air and catches the badge that he thinks he needs, but it turns out to be the wrong one.[8] After multiple days of being unable to find Ponzu, Kurapika and Leorio return to the landing site to see if any examinees are waiting there. The two find Gon waiting in a nearby tree, and he agrees to track Ponzu since her chemical weapons will have distinctive odors. He eventually leads them to a cave, and Leorio decides to go inside by himself, with Kurapika and Gon adamant about following him if he doesn't return after 30 minutes.[9]

After night falls, Leorio suddenly yells out from inside the cave that there are snakes and tells the two to stay out. However, they quickly rush down into the cave and find Leorio left immobilized by several snake bites. Ponzu is also inside the cave and warns them that the snakes will attack them if they try to leave, also revealing that Bourbon is dead.[9]

Gon rescuing Kurapika, Leorio, and Ponzu

Ponzu recounts how her bees accidentally killed Bourbon and that they will now have to wait until the time runs out and the committee rescues them. However, with Leorio in critical condition, Gon risks his own life to retrieve the antidote from Bourbon's body. After Kurapika uses it on both Leorio and him, Gon offers to trade Bourbon's badge for Ponzu's sleeping gas that she initially used to enter the cave. Gon holds his breath for five minutes so that all the snakes are incapacitated and then carries the three other examinees to safety. While he leaves Bourbon's badge with Ponzu so that the committee will find her, he takes her own badge so that Leorio can pass the phase.[10]

The boat off the coast of Zevil Island starts its engine, and an announcement is made that the Fourth Phase of the exam has ended, telling all examinees to make their way to the landing site. As Pokkle and Killua move about in the bushes, it's added that they will fail if they don't arrive in the next hour and that anyone who attempts to trade badges at the landing site will be immediately disqualified. Nine examinees wait near the edge of the water and spot the Hunter Association airship in the distance: Hisoka, Gon, Kurapika, Pokkle, Leorio, Gittarackur, Killua, Bodoro, and Hanzo.[11]
